About the Role

As a Transportation Construction Inspector Intern, you will play a crucial role in shaping the future of Boston's transit infrastructure. Working closely with our Construction Inspectors and Resident Engineers, you'll ensure that the construction projects meet our high standards and specifications. This is a dynamic opportunity to apply your engineering knowledge, gain invaluable field experience, and contribute to projects that make a real difference in people's lives.

This is a paid internship. Compensation ranges from $19 - $24 hourly, depending on experience. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in reviewing construction work to ensure conformance to plans and specifications.
  • Compute construction quantities and assist in preparing reports for interim and final payments.
  • Assist in reviewing construction work of contractors and subcontractors to ensure compliance with contract documents, reporting any discrepancy to the Resident Engineer.
  • Assist in performing inspections of construction materials at source and on project sites for conformity to specifications.
  • Assist the Resident Engineer and Construction Inspectors in investigating and reporting construction and safety related problems encountered in the field.
  • Participate in regular safety inspection “walk downs”.
  • Assist in the maintenance of a daily project diary, files, test reports, etc. as directed by the Resident Engineer or Project Manager.
  • Perform load counts of material delivered to construction sites.
  • Obtain samples of materials to be sent to the laboratory for testing purposes.
  • Assist in responding to each inquiry, whether from a customer, vendor, or co-worker in a courteous and professional manner.

Who We're Looking For

Educational Background

  • Currently enrolled in an Engineering or related program at an accredited institution.
  • Completion of at least one year (minimum of 27 semester credit hours) of college course work as part of an associate degree program in engineering, engineering technology, construction technology, engineering science, surveying technology, drafting/CAD, or heavy equipment operations; or
  • Completion of at least one year (minimum of 27 semester credit hours) of college course work as part of a bachelor’s degree program in engineering, engineering technology, environmental sciences or environmental technology, construction management, construction supervision, engineering management, construction engineering or construction engineering technology, transportation planning, mathematics, physical science, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, landscape architecture, surveying, physics, geology or forestry.

Experience Level

  • 0-2 years of experience, including any internships or co-op placements.

Skills

  • One construction season (minimum of 3 months) of work experience in highway, bridge, or other civil engineering related construction inspection is desired but not required.
  • Ability to use Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Database applications.
  • Effective quantitative, organizational, and analytical skills.

Job Conditions

  • Ability to pass a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check, background screening, and the MBTA’s medical requirements, including a physical examination and drug and alcohol screening.
